Viña Tondonia Reserva 2008 · sommelier.vi.cat

This wine has had more rest than the front-of-house team. Six years in barrel, followed by bottle ageing. The winery works to a different calendar; table four may still be watching the parking meter.

What I found in the glass

Haro and Rioja Alta: zooming in

Haro sits at the western end of the Rioja wine region in northern Spain. It belongs to Rioja Alta, one of the appellation’s three zones alongside Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. Atlantic influence is stronger in this western sector than farther east. The Ebro valley, its terraces and surrounding hills create a landscape more varied than a row of bottles carrying the same certification label might suggest.

Tondonia is also a place

The winery locates Viña Tondonia in a bend of the Ebro near Haro. Here the name on the label leads to a real group of vineyards, rather than simply a brand. Picture the riverbank, vine-covered slopes and the river curving around the landscape.

The 2008 Reserva technical sheet confirms grapes from the producer’s own vineyards and six years in barrel. These are two parts of the story: where the grapes grow and the decisions made by the winemaker. The Ebro provides the setting; it does not take care of the racking.

What does this add to the glass?

It lets us discuss one corner of Rioja before trying to describe all of it. The lively acidity I found belongs to my experience of this bottle, not an automatic guarantee for every Haro wine. Vintage, grapes, winemaking and storage matter too. And “Reserva” refers to an ageing category, not a geographical zone: Haro and Tondonia do much more to locate us on the map.
