Priorat: begin with the landscape
17 October 2026 · Vikipedia
You open the wine list. A Priorat catches your eye. You ask about it and, somewhere in the explanation, “llicorella”, “Cariñena” and “DOQ” make an appearance.
You nod.
Perhaps it all makes perfect sense. Or perhaps you are waiting for a pause to ask what any of it means without interrupting the ceremony.
You can ask. You are choosing wine for dinner, not defending a thesis.
Start with the ground
Llicorella is Priorat’s characteristic slate. Along with the terrain, it makes vine growing demanding.
That gives you a starting point for understanding the place. Rather more useful than dropping the word and waiting for the table to look impressed.
Two grapes and a few letters
Garnacha and Cariñena are its main varieties. DOQ stands for Denominació d’Origen Qualificada: Priorat is the only Catalan appellation with that status.
We have now translated part of the list into the language of people who would like something they enjoy drinking.
Now for the bottle
Knowing the origin gives you context. It does not replace tasting a particular wine or decide what you feel like drinking.
If you are in a restaurant, explain what you are looking for and ask about the bottle being suggested. A good explanation should help you choose, rather than leave you feeling you need a qualification.
The wine list can be long. The distance between the person who knows and the person asking does not have to be.
