Catalonia puts wine around an innovation table: now the ideas need to reach the vineyard

Some tables in the wine world fill up with glasses. Others fill up with proposals. Catalonia’s new wine-sector innovation forum currently belongs to the second category. Established on 22 October at the Centre Àgora in Vilafranca del Penedès, it is coordinated by INCAVI. This deserves attention, although the celebration bottle can stay in the fridge a little longer: creating a place to collaborate is a start. Showing that it works will be the job of the years ahead.

What has actually happened?

According to the Catalan government’s announcement of 22 October 2026, the forum brings together businesses, researchers and public administration to identify sector needs and turn them into shared priorities. It forms part of the INNOVA 2030 plan. The opening session presented the planned structure and grouped needs by topic to guide future working groups.

Potential areas include sustainability, climate adaptation, new products, process improvement, digital technology, artificial intelligence, data and markets. Participants include wineries, cooperatives, farming organisations, appellations, associations, universities, technology centres and specialists. An assembly will make decisions, INCAVI will provide the technical secretariat, and flexible working groups are envisaged alongside an annual in-person meeting.

Why this could matter beyond the headline

In our view, the potential value lies in shortening the distance between a practical question and someone equipped to answer it. A winery may spot a recurring problem without having the resources to design a trial. A research team may have a promising tool without fully understanding the constraints of a small holding. Bringing them together does not solve the problem automatically, but it can help define it properly. A well-framed question often saves more money than buying the wrong answer.

Consider hypothetical examples, rather than projects already approved by this forum: comparing management strategies, evaluating a monitoring tool or testing whether a process change preserves the intended wine style. Useful results require a clear measure, a reference for comparison and defined conditions. “It went very well” is welcome over lunch. In a trial, it needs considerably more supporting evidence.

One solution will not necessarily fit every place

Geography matters. Penedès, Priorat and inland winegrowing areas are not interchangeable settings. Even within an appellation, aspect, terrain, water availability and the intended wine can call for different decisions. That diversity makes it worth asking under which conditions a proposal was tested before applying it somewhere else.

Our first expectation is therefore that proposals should explain their conditions of use. Advice that says where it works, where it does not and what it costs is more valuable than a universal recipe. Vines have the inconvenient habit of failing to read the presentation before behaving differently.

Going digital is not about collecting screens

The announcement’s references to artificial intelligence and data do not mean every winery needs the same software. Our interpretation is simpler: first identify a decision worth improving, then choose the tool. If a system does not help people understand a situation or act with better judgement, another screen can simply become another job.

It also makes sense to ask who collects the data, who interprets it and whether a small business can afford to use the solution. These are our suggested criteria for evaluating future projects, not officially announced conditions. Innovation may mean introducing technology, but it can also mean organising a process better or getting existing knowledge to the people who need it.

What we cannot claim yet

The announcement reviewed does not provide trial results, specific project budgets or quantified improvements attributable to the forum. Promising water savings, better quality or higher sales would therefore be premature. Nor does an annual meeting guarantee continuity: the work between meetings will matter.

The source confirming the event is institutional. It establishes the launch, structure and stated aims; it is not an independent assessment of effectiveness. That distinction matters. An initiative can be well designed and still require adjustment when it meets the farming calendar, available resources and real-world problems.

What Vikipedia will be watching

We will be interested in which needs receive priority, which projects begin, how results are shared and whether limitations and unsuccessful attempts are explained too. Publishing what does not work can stop other wineries stumbling over the same stone. Stones already get quite enough attention in tasting notes.

The forum offers an opportunity to coordinate. Its next chapter must show whether that coordination leads to useful vineyard and winery decisions. For now, the event is confirmed and expectations remain open. We will follow the evidence with interest, without mistaking an opening ceremony for a harvest.
